Obama describes George Washington as a slave owner and points out issues in the country’s foundation.

Obama and Larry David release a new preview for their upcoming HBO Max comedy series

Former President Barack Obama has criticized the Founding Fathers as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. He acknowledged their intellect but pointed out the significant flaws in their connections to slavery. In a recent interview, Obama remarked that it’s important to recognize the intertwined nature of America’s history, stating that one can admire figures like George Washington while also acknowledging his role as a slave owner.

As the country prepares to mark this milestone with various celebrations, Obama is using the occasion to deliver a cautionary message about the current state of American democracy. He noted, “It’s about us being this mixed group and embodying the contradictions of this country.” By doing so, he aims to address the complexities inherent in the nation’s founding.

Obama has made multiple media appearances surrounding the opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, which encompasses a museum and library as well as community programs. This center is intended to reflect his legacy and ties to Chicago’s South Side.

During the center’s opening ceremony, attended by numerous dignitaries, he emphasized that the nation’s founding was a significant experiment that was far from guaranteed to succeed. He further stated that while the Founders possessed remarkable insight, they did fall short of the values articulated in the Declaration of Independence, notably by perpetuating slavery and limiting the voting rights to property-owning white men. However, he also acknowledged the foresight embedded in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which provides a framework for future generations to strive towards a more perfect union.

Additionally, early in Obama’s political career, it was revealed that some of his ancestors had owned slaves, a fact that has resurfaced in political discussions over the years. His former press secretary noted that one relative owned slaves while another participated in the Civil War on the side of the Union.
