Georgia Congressman Challenges Broadcast Networks
Republican Representative Buddy Carter from Georgia is urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to review its broadcasting rules after major networks, such as ABC, NBC, and CBS, declined to air President Donald Trump’s prime-time address on July 16.
In a letter sent to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, Carter expressed concerns about whether the networks fulfilled their responsibility to “serve the public interest,” and if such actions should affect their future licensing. He emphasized that public airwaves should be used to inform citizens, not manipulated by corporate leaders deciding which national issues are worthy of coverage.
Carter voiced “grave concerns,” suggesting that while networks may disagree with Trump’s comments, they still have a duty to broadcast them. He pointed out that avoiding live coverage of a significant presidential address could potentially silence public discourse on foreign threats to elections.
He argued, “Regardless of party affiliation, Americans have the right to hear information directly from the President and draw their own conclusions.” Instead of airing the speech, CBS cut it short while ABC and NBC opted out completely.
Carter criticized the idea that streaming the speech online suffices as an alternative to traditional television access, especially for those lacking reliable internet. He stressed that access to information is crucial for all Americans.
This letter follows Trump’s address where he criticized ABC and NBC for not covering the event and accused them of participating in a conspiracy affecting election integrity. He claimed their non-coverage stemmed from discomfort with the subject matter, suggesting that the networks were aware it was important but chose to ignore it.
During his speech, Trump referenced the immediate declassification of key documents revealing alleged vulnerabilities in U.S. election infrastructure. He reiterated that trust is essential for national greatness, stating, “Without trust, there is no greatness.”
The contents of the documents mentioned allegations of election system weaknesses, claims about China’s acquisition of voter data, and studies involving noncitizens on voter rolls. It’s important to note that Fox News Digital could not independently confirm the claims made by Trump.
Trump also expressed frustration that such information had been hidden from the public for years, declaring that it was time for this to change. Following the stream of Trump’s speech, ABC and NBC later provided summaries on their respective networks, while CBS shifted their broadcast to Trump’s speech midway but cut it off after he criticized the networks.
Carter concluded that the issues raised during the address were significant enough to warrant live coverage, emphasizing that they relate to national security and election integrity.
