As if last weekend’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump wasn’t insane enough, President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the presidential race.
While the news won’t come as a shock to anyone who witnessed the recent debates or Biden’s deteriorating mental state, what is shocking is that the president’s team has insisted Biden will not back down.
“So it may come as a surprise even to people in the know in Washington, D.C.” Allie Beth Stuckey commented, noting that this debate may have been crucial in the decision.
“The Biden administration’s agreement to a live televised debate with Donald Trump before the Democratic National Convention may go down in history as one of the worst strategic decisions in the history of the campaign. It just didn’t work out for him,” Stuckey said.
Perhaps even more interesting than the reason for Biden’s campaign exit is how he decided to withdraw from the race: in a statement posted to his X account.
“My fellow Americans,” the statement began, “Over the past three and a half years, we have made great strides as a nation. Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We have made historic investments to rebuild our nation, lower prescription drug costs for seniors, and expand affordable health care to a record number of Americans.”
“It was a strange-looking letter,” Stuckey said, calling the contents of the letter “delusional,” particularly the section boasting about the “world’s strongest economy.”
“Serving as your President has been the greatest honor of my life. Although I intend to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and our country for me to step down and focus on fulfilling the duties of my presidency for the remainder of my term,” the letter continued.
The statement came from Biden’s official X account, but many users of the app were confused as to why it sounded so unpresidential.
“A lot of people were saying, ‘Why isn’t it on presidential letterhead? Why doesn’t it look official?’ Some people were joking, ‘Oh my goodness, Biden will be furious when he finds out he’s withdrawn from the election,’ because it looked so unofficial.”
While many on the left are backing Kamala Harris in the wake of Biden’s withdrawal, there is one major politician who has yet to endorse her.
“President Obama issued a statement immediately after the announcement, of course praising Biden and touting his accomplishments,” Stuckey said, “but it was very interesting that he did not endorse Kamala Harris.”
“If he doesn’t do it soon, he probably won’t do it. So, now it’s about to get really interesting.”
