Former President Barack Obama claimed the moral high ground Thursday, warning that “one side” in politics is “trying to stack the deck” by stealing the election and politicizing the U.S. government.
He declined to say which political parties fall under these anti-democratic principles, but added that they should be opposed.
In a speech at the 3rd Annual General Meeting Obama Foundation Democracy Forum in chicago illinois, The 63-year-old called for a new commitment to a pluralistic ethic, saying the consequences of failing to do so were of little value.
he said:
Potentially, one side could stack the deck and try to take a lock. [long pause] Seize power permanently by actively suppressing votes, politicizing the military, or using the judicial and criminal justice systems to pursue opponents.
In such situations, pluralism does not require us to simply sit on the sidelines and say, “Well, I don't know if that's okay.''
In situations like this, a red line has been crossed and we must stand firm.
Critics were quick to point out that Mr. Obama had only one political party in mind when he made this claim.
President Obama has remained largely silent since enthusiastically endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for a disastrous 2024 election loss.
In the process, Democrats lost all battleground states and the popular vote, and Democrats lost control of the House and Senate.
Mr. Obama was identified as one of the Democrats who defended President Joe Biden and worked hard behind the scenes to nominate Ms. Harris as his successor.
Democratic candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also lost her presidential bid in 2016 despite President Obama's enthusiastic support.
