Obama rejects Trump's unusual claims that he was the main figure in the Russiagate controversy in an unusual statement.

Former President Barack Obama addressed President Donald Trump’s recent claims in an unusual official statement on Tuesday evening. Earlier that day, Trump accused Obama of being the “mastermind” behind allegations regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election and called for an investigation into Obama’s actions.

In response, Obama’s spokesperson, Patrick Rodenbush, emphasized in a statement that the former President’s office usually refrains from engaging in such matters but deemed these claims serious enough to warrant a response. He characterized the allegations as “outrageous and ridiculous,” suggesting they were merely distractions. He further noted that recent documents did not support the assertion that Russia successfully manipulated the election results.

Rodenbush pointed out that these findings align with a 2020 report from the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, which confirmed Russia’s attempts to influence the election but concluded that there was no interference in the actual voting process. This statement follows Trump’s election victory against Hillary Clinton, amidst National Intelligence Director Tarsi Gabbard’s claims of “overwhelming evidence” implicating Obama and his national security team in the ongoing Trump-Russia investigation, based on recently released documents.

Gabbard alleged that Obama administration officials had “manufactured and politicized” intelligence to suggest that Russia aimed to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, despite conflicting information from intelligence sources. Newly released documents link several high-profile figures from Obama’s administration, including the Director of National Intelligence and CIA Director John Brennan.

Concerning Gabbard’s criminal referral to the Department of Justice based on these findings, details on specific individuals involved remain unclear. Trump, when asked about who should be investigated, pointed to Obama, asserting that he initiated the whole situation. He mentioned other prominent figures, including Biden and Comey, as participants in what he described as a collective effort against him.

While Obama-era officials have largely stayed silent regarding these allegations, Trump claimed he possesses extensive documentation supporting his position, alleging Obama was at the center of the conspiracy.

Trump also accused Hillary Clinton of financing a fabricated report from Christopher Steele as part of a plot against him. Steele’s report was linked to anti-Trump narratives funded by Clinton’s campaign. Additionally, the documents tied to the Russian probe served as the foundation for FISA warrants against a former Trump campaign aide, which Trump described as based on unfounded rumors.

He went on to express frustration over what he sees as the systematic manipulation of information by intelligence leaders during that period, stating that it took him two years to decipher the fabricated nature of the Steele report.

In a discussion about the history of surveillance during his campaign, Trump suggested that the events surrounding the investigation were unprecedented in American politics. Looking back at communications from Brennan to Obama about plans to stir Russian-related scandals, the complexities of the situation have several layers that continue to develop.

Currently, investigations into the actions of former officials like Brennan and Comey are ongoing. After the conclusion of Robert Mueller’s own investigation into the matter in 2019—ultimately finding no evidence of conspiracy between Trump’s campaign and Russia—another special counsel, John Durham, was tasked with examining the origins of the investigation. That inquiry revealed, at least in part, how the FBI had been influenced by political motives leading up to the 2016 election.
