Obama Endorses Spanberger in Virginia Gubernatorial Race
Former President Barack Obama has thrown his support behind Abigail Spanberger, a former Democratic Congresswoman from Virginia, in her bid for the governor’s office. He even made an appearance in a significant advertisement backing her campaign.
Spanberger is competing against Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears. In the ad, Obama emphasizes the importance of Virginia’s election, calling it “one of the most important in this country this year.”
While discussing critical Democratic issues, Obama mentioned abortion rights, highlighting the ongoing attacks from Republicans. “We know Republicans will continue to attack abortion rights and women’s rights,” he stated. “That’s why it’s important to have the right governor, and I’m proud to support Abigail Spanberger.”
In the advertisement, Obama also criticized Republican policies, claiming they are “raising costs for working families so billionaires can get massive tax cuts.”
He continued, stating, “As governor, Abigail will stand up for Virginia families. She will work to build an economy that works for everyone, not just big corporations and the wealthy. But that won’t happen without you.”
The gubernatorial race is gaining attention for being a key election, particularly for the Republican National Committee (RNC).
RNC Chairman Joe Gruters emphasized the importance of voter registration, voting integrity, and election protection as top priorities for the party. He mentioned the team’s efforts over the past months to ensure election integrity in New Jersey and Virginia.
Gruters noted their focus on protecting votes and driving voter turnout to help Republican candidates succeed. Additionally, he pointed out that comments from Virginia’s Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones may have adversely affected Democrats, including Spanberger.
