Nervous Democrats Mobilize for New Jersey’s Gubernatorial Race

Political anxiety is palpable among Democrats as they look to their most prominent figure for help in the New Jersey gubernatorial race. Former President Barack Obama is set to rally with Rep. Mikie Sherrill this Saturday in Newark, aiming to energize voters ahead of a challenging election against Republican candidate Jack Ciatarelli.

The urgency for this rally has intensified following a startling poll by Atlas Intel, which indicates Sherrill’s lead over Ciatarelli is razor-thin—just under one percentage point, 50.2% to 49.3%. This is very much within the margin of error.

Sherrill’s ability to mobilize the Democratic minority is crucial for her campaign, especially in Newark, where nearly half the population is Black and over a third Hispanic. A recent Suffolk University poll shows her leading among Black voters by 65% to 12% and among Hispanic voters by 63% to 18%.

Obama has previously supported Sherrill through a substantial fundraiser, raising $1.5 million for her campaign. This rally marks his involvement after an earlier appearance alongside then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who faced defeat in a similar contest a year ago.

Interestingly, there hasn’t been any indication that President Biden will campaign for Sherrill, who stepped back from the presidential race earlier this year, citing various risks as too pressing to ignore.

While Ciatarelli has his own campaign event planned, he seems unfazed by Obama’s influence. He remarked that candidates must focus on winning regardless of who their opponents bring along for support. It’s not about the past or even historical figures; it’s about what’s happening now.

In traditionally blue states like New Jersey, off-year elections typically don’t cause much concern for Democrats. However, Sherrill’s current lead has shrunk to less than three points in the Real Clear Politics polling average, raising alarms as she attempts to fill the shoes of the term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. Biden had won the state by a significant margin in the 2020 election, and Trump experienced a narrow loss to Harris.

Ciatarelli, who lost to Murphy last election by a slim margin, is gaining traction amidst rising Republican support. The Republican National Committee is stepping up its investment in crucial states.

Some new polling data sheds light on Sherrill’s standing; while she leads Ciatarelli by a single percentage point, early voting numbers show an uptick, maintaining a slight advantage for Democrats.

Sherrill, seeking a centrist approach amidst a politically charged environment, faces challenges, especially when responding to straightforward questions about her legislative priorities. One exchange during an interview raised eyebrows, as her stalled answer earned criticism.

Complicating matters, revelations about her Naval Academy graduation have surfaced, suggesting she did not participate due to punitive measures related to a well-known cheating scandal.

In the meantime, Ciatarelli enjoys Trump’s backing, which may be a factor in energizing his base as the campaign nears its conclusion. Trump has decided to bypass the New Jersey scene and head to Mar-a-Lago instead, which could play into the dynamics of voter turnout.

It’s a precarious situation for both candidates. Sherrill has been inviting numerous officials to her campaign events, recognizing the stakes involved. Meanwhile, Ciatarelli is faced with the challenge of appealing to both Trump supporters and independent voters without creating friction.

As the final push nears, New Jersey and Virginia remain the only states with gubernatorial elections this Tuesday. Obama is also scheduled to appear in Norfolk, Virginia, supporting former Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger as she competes against Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle Sears.

Overall, total spending for the election is expected to surpass $200 million, with both parties investing heavily in this pivotal contest.
