Obama supports Spanberger in significant Virginia gubernatorial race

Obama Campaigning in Virginia and New Jersey Gubernatorial Races

Former President Barack Obama has returned to the campaign trail during the final stretch of critical gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, aiming to provide substantial support for the Democratic candidates.

In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger—previously a CIA officer and congresswoman—faces off against Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears, who is notable as a Jamaican immigrant and Marine veteran. This election is historic in that it will result in Virginia’s first female governor, regardless of the party that wins.

Obama endorsed Spanberger in two political ads that criticized Republicans back in early October. He’s set to headline a rally for Spanberger in Norfolk on November 1.

Interestingly, just a year ago, Obama found himself in a difficult position with the Virginia Democratic Party, amid criticism about black male voters favoring then-Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign. Now, he’s encouraging Virginians to support Spanberger instead of diminishing the value of black female candidates.

Obama’s Legacy on the Line

It’s shaping up to be a tense moment for Obama as he seeks to solidify his influence within the party.

Last year, while supporting Harris, Obama traversed battleground states like Pennsylvania and Georgia, attempting to rally support during an unusual election cycle. At one point, he even addressed concerns from black men about supporting a female president, expressing frustration about the turnout compared to his own campaign days.

His remarks about “brothers” not feeling comfortable with a female candidate did not sit well with everyone. Some voters found his comments inappropriate and demeaning. A Philadelphia voter at the time described the tone as “disgusting.”

Spanberger’s Campaign Challenges

The Spanberger campaign recently faced turbulence due to an undercover video where a campaign worker expressed frustration over the racial dynamics of the race. The remark suggested a conflict between supporting a “white woman in the CIA” and a “black woman,” a sentiment reflecting the complicated social issues at play.

New Jersey and Virginia stand out as the only states holding gubernatorial elections in this off-year stretch. In fact, Winsome Sears is the only black candidate among the four major parties in both states.

Obama’s Continuing Political Engagement

Obama officially endorsed Spanberger in ads focused on abortion and tax policies earlier this month. He called Virginia’s election one of the most crucial in the nation, making it clear that he believes the right governor is essential to protect women’s rights.

In one ad, he argued that Republican policies unfairly benefit the wealthy at the expense of working families.

On November 1, Obama is also scheduled to visit New Jersey, where he’s supporting Democratic candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill against Republican Jack Ciatarelli.

Fox News Digital attempted to get a response from the Sears campaign regarding Obama’s support for Spanberger but did not receive immediate feedback. Furthermore, Obama’s office has yet to comment on both the upcoming rally in Virginia and his previous remarks about black male voters.
