Obama Surprises Chicago Students with Reading Session
On Tuesday, a unique surprise unfolded at a Chicago library for a group of elementary school students when former President Barack Obama paid a visit, sporting a festive Santa hat.
The students from Burke Elementary School were engaged in a lesson about leadership at the Bessie Coleman Branch of the Chicago Public Library when Obama entered and greeted them with, “How are you all doing?” After introducing himself to the class, he began reading the book “Fly Free: How Bessie Coleman’s Dreams Soared.”
The book tells the inspiring story of Coleman, who became the first black female pilot by breaking barriers in her pursuit of aviation.
Obamas’ visit, shared via a video on social media, highlighted his enjoyment of the moment. He mentioned, “I had fun reading to the students at Burke Elementary School today at the Chicago Public Library. When the Obama Presidential Center opens next year, we plan to open a new branch of the library for area residents to enjoy.”
This event was part of a preview for a reading program set to launch at the library branch connected to the Obama Presidential Center, scheduled to open in June. This center, which has faced many delays over the years, has drawn attention for its planned features, including a library, museum, gardens, and athletic facilities spread across a 20-acre campus.
Back in May 2015, it was announced that the center would be built on the South Side of Chicago, but the timeline shifted due to various legal and federal challenges. In fact, Obama mentioned during a visit to the Crystal Bridges Museum in Arkansas, “We’re going to open in June so you don’t have to pull up your coat,” although he did not specify an exact date.
The Obama Foundation describes the center as “a vibrant community hub, an economic hub, and a beacon of democracy right here on Chicago’s South Side.” There have been vocal concerns from local residents regarding the impact of the center, with some dubbing it a “monster” and fearing displacement.
In short, the project’s journey to realization is complex but filled with optimistic aspirations for community engagement and new ideas. As Obama continues to share his vision, one can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty about what the future holds for this landmark initiative.
