Obama warns that the US is nearing a shift toward autocracy

Obama: US 'dangerously close' to moving toward autocracy

Obama Critiques Current Political Climate

Former President Obama expressed concerns on Tuesday about the current political landscape, labeling it as “inconsistent” with American democratic values during an event in Hartford, Connecticut.

He remarked, “It’s consistent with the dictatorship…” suggesting that while the nation hasn’t fully reached this point, we’re perilously close to normalizing such behavior.

During the discussion with Heather Cox Richardson, a professor at Boston University, he emphasized that the rhetoric heard from those in government today indicates a weak commitment to liberal democracy. This concern isn’t just about his generation; it appears to span much further.

Obama’s critiques didn’t solely target the current administration; he also pointed fingers at the Republican Party. He stated, “In 2020, one person won the election, but it wasn’t the one complaining about it, and that’s just a fact,” akin to the numbers during his own inauguration.

He noted, “In one of our major parties, that’s not true, but there are a lot of people who know to pretend that way, and that’s dangerous.”

Despite his serious observations, Obama maintains a sense of optimism about the country’s trajectory, even amid recent protests like the “No Kings” demonstration. “I’m still a ‘hope’ guy,” he shared. He believes young people should feel a sense of urgency about injustice and cruelty, and that it’s essential to channel this energy into constructive change.

“If you want to create change, it’s not about subtraction but addition. You have to find common ground with those who might not agree with everything you believe but do share some values,” he concluded.
