Obamas to create Larry David's comedy series on US history for HBO

The Obamas are teaming up with Larry David to produce a six-episode sketch comedy series for HBO, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States, as announced recently.

This untitled limited series will delve into American history and is being executive produced by David, Jeff Schaffer, and Higher Ground.

David and Schaffer, who collaborated on shows like “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” will reunite as writers for this new project, with David starring and Schaffer directing.

A press release from Warner Bros Discovery revealed that the Obamas aim to commemorate the nation’s milestone by highlighting its distinctive history.

“I found myself facing some of the world’s toughest leaders and dealing with significant issues,” former President Obama shared in a statement. “Honestly, I wasn’t exactly prepared for working alongside Larry David.”

Schaffer described the historical figures portrayed by David in the series as unique and perhaps overlooked.

“The characters Larry plays really didn’t change history. They were mostly forgotten,” Schaffer noted. “And that’s actually a good thing.”

The series is likely to feature some cast members from HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Amy Gravitt, director of comedy programming at HBO and HBO Max, remarked on the significance of David’s perspective: “It’s hard to remember a time before ‘Curb.’ We’re thrilled to see Larry back at HBO, offering insights into our shared history as we mark this semi-centennial.”

David also shared his thoughts on returning to television, noting that after “Curb,” he celebrated with a three-day bubble party—though a severe allergic reaction to foam sent him back to his quieter life as a beekeeper, where he’s focused on harvesting organic honey from wildflowers.
