Ocasio-Cortez Highlights Election Message for Trump
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York emphasized that the Democrats’ win in Tuesday’s election should convey a clear message to President Trump. Speaking to CNN’s Abby Phillippe, she noted that her victory symbolizes more than just success for the Democratic Party; it’s a broader message about the country itself.
“I think people are really shocked by what’s coming out of this administration,” she stated. “They’re frustrated with Congress and the Republican majorities in both the House and Senate. It’s clear they now recognize Trump as someone who mainly serves billionaires and the corporate interests that are making life tough for working-class Americans.”
Ocasio-Cortez expressed that voters are seeking representatives who will advocate for working individuals, aiming to make lives more affordable and secure.
She also praised the election of New York’s Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, calling it “impressive” not just for his defeat of Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, but also former Governor Andrew Cuomo, a contentious figure within the Democratic Party.
“He was fighting on two fronts, not just one,” she pointed out. “And despite that, he secured a landslide victory. This indicates that the Democratic Party cannot continue as is—overlooking the future and marginalizing young and diverse candidates who could energize the electorate.”
At a victory rally in Brooklyn, Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders stood alongside Mamdani, with Sanders remarking on social media that Mamdani’s achievement is one of the significant political upsets in recent American history. “It proves that a government can be formed for working people, not just the top 1%,” Sanders said, expressing excitement to collaborate with Mamdani in creating an inclusive city.
Mamdani won the election with 50.6%, amounting to 1,036,051 votes, while Cuomo garnered 41.7% or 854,995 votes, and Sliwa obtained 7.1% with 146,137 votes.
In addition to this, Democrats also succeeded in gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia.
