Ocasio-Cortez Faces Online Backlash for Major Mix-Up
Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York is receiving significant backlash on social media after she made an awkward gaffe during a recent CNN town hall meeting.
During the session, she criticized Republicans, but in an odd twist, she accused Deloitte of releasing toxic chemicals into waterways, which struck many as bizarre.
“AOC needs some acting lessons,” one commenter noted, calling her performance embarrassing.
When questioned about President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend federal funding for New York’s infrastructure amid a government shutdown, Ocasio-Cortez took an unexpected detour, discussing the Environmental Protection Agency.
She stated, “This administration seems to believe that investments in housing and energy are just Democratic priorities. Honestly, having an EPA as a Democratic priority? Do you remember what this country was like before it existed? Rural rivers were burning because corporations were polluting the communities.” She added that companies like Deloitte and 3M were responsible for dumping hazardous materials.
Then, in a moment of confusion, she incorrectly suggested they were trying to eliminate the FDA, likely meaning the EPA.
“You’re right. It is vital for Democrats to prevent addiction and identify the harmful chemicals being released, often without public awareness,” she said.
The clip gained rapid popularity after being shared on social media, quickly racking up millions of views.
Critics were quick to note that Deloitte is actually an accounting firm, not a chemical company. Many speculated she may have intended to refer to DuPont.
One response read, “Deloitte is an accounting firm, so how are they polluting rural areas? @AOC really should consider revisiting drama school.” Another commenter humorously remarked: “As a former Deloitte employee, I can assure you they only pour glasses of wine. Plus, I doubt AOC realizes that Deloitte is actively engaged in climate initiatives.”
Further reactions included playful jabs at Ocasio-Cortez, with one user joking about a childhood memory involving the fictitious dumping of accountants by Deloitte.
“If you failed to wish everyone a happy Deloitte weekend last Friday, they might just send someone to break your kneecaps,” another satirical comment suggested.
Deloitte has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the incident.
