New York Democratic Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been riveted with online backlash for blaming the Jewish lobby for the Democratic Party's electoral woes.
Ocasio-Cortez posted the letter on social media in an attempt to provoke liberal infighting against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobbying group.
“Using Jews as scapegoats for your own failures is an unrepentant and truly pathetic and ugly tactic.”
“If people want to talk about how members of Congress are being unduly influenced by special interest groups that push very unpopular agendas that drive voters away from the Democratic Party, then they should be talking about AIPAC.” said Ocasio-Cortez responded to a senior adviser to Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.).
The lawmaker quickly came under fire from those who saw the criticism as motivated by anti-Semitism.
“Not surprisingly, AOC has accused @AIPAC of having “undue influence'' on Congress over the election and falsely claimed that supporting Israel is “very unpopular.'' It's still very worrying to see the reaction. Scapegoating Jews for your own failures is an unrepentant and truly pathetic and ugly tactic.” answered Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League.
“Many lessons should be learned from the 2024 election results. If @AOC's only lesson is to condemn Jews and Israel, then she deserves to be accused of anti-Semitic trafficking. is.” answered Newsweek contributor Joel Petrin.
“There is an important discussion to be had about AIPAC, but focusing too much on AIPAC here is a dangerous metaphor when there are so many special interests that operate in the same way.” said Amy Spitalnick of the Jewish Public Affairs Council;
Ocasio-Cortez has been accused of anti-Semitism in the past, and has also been criticized by the far left for not being sufficiently anti-Israel. His political party, the Democratic Socialists of America, announced in October that it would vote to censure him for daring to approve Congressional legislation affirming Israel's right to exist.
