Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) recently stated that she is still waiting for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to respond regarding a possible investigation into her immigration webinar held in February.
“I’ve reached out, but they’re not getting back to me. I’m just trying to inform people about their constitutional rights using the First Amendment. I’ve written formal letters, yet still no reply,” Ocasio-Cortez shared with Fox News Digital on Tuesday.
She has set a deadline for the DOJ to reply by March 5th.
Some New York Democrats expressed concern over the potential arrests of lawmakers, stating it reflects the administration’s readiness to manipulate laws and erode democratic norms in troubling ways.
Earlier in February, Tom Homan, referred to as President Trump’s “border emperor,” claimed he had requested the DOJ look into the “Know Your Rights” seminar held by Ocasio-Cortez on February 12.
Homan suggested that Ocasio-Cortez may have breached federal law by conducting the webinar.
“Perhaps AOC is facing some trouble now,” Homan remarked during a February 13 interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham.
In response, Ocasio-Cortez defended her actions, asserting they are protected under the First Amendment.
She reached out to Attorney General Pam Bondy in late February, stating, “We’ve clarified whether the Justice Department will yield to political pressure and misuse the agency against elected officials over speech and disagreements.”
“It’s been 14 days since Mr. Homan initially threatened to misuse your agency, but I haven’t received any communication from the federal government yet,” Ocasio-Cortez added in her February 27 letter. “Homan’s conduct jeopardizes our constitutional rights and hinders transparency.”
