Ocasio-Cortez promises to file for impeachment against Supreme Court justices after decision on Trump immunity

Democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has accused the U.S. Supreme Court of corruption and promised to introduce articles of impeachment after the court’s decision on presidential immunity.

The court ruled Monday that former President Donald Trump has executive immunity for official acts, but not for acts that could be classified as unofficial.

“The Supreme Court has become embroiled in a corruption crisis that is out of control.”

“Under our constitutional separation of powers structure, the nature of presidential powers entitles former presidents to absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for acts that fall within the scope of their categorical and exclusive constitutional authority,” the majority decision stated. “And former presidents are entitled to at least presumptive immunity for all official acts. For nonofficial acts, they have no immunity.”

The 6-3 decision was split along ideological lines.

Democrats and critics of Trump were infuriated by the ruling, accusing the court of being biased in favor of the former president, with Rep. Ocasio-Cortez being the most theatrical.

“The Supreme Court is embroiled in a corruption crisis that is out of control. Today’s decision is an attack on American democracy,” she said. I have written On her official social media accounts.

“It is the responsibility of Congress to protect the country from this authoritarian grip,” she added. “I intend to introduce articles of impeachment when I return home.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar (Democrat) of Minnesota Responded Support Ocasio-Cortez.

“The time is now! Let’s do it!” she posted on social media.

Ocasio-Cortez previously Said She argued that Justice Clarence Thomas should be impeached on bribery charges, but acknowledged that would be nearly impossible with Republicans controlling the House of Representatives.

Trump declared it a “big victory” for the Constitution and democracy, but others noted the ruling left the court unsuccessful in showing how to distinguish between official and unofficial acts of the president.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in her dissent, said the ruling improperly granted Trump all of the immunity he sought and more.

“This makes a mockery of a fundamental principle of our constitution and political system: that no one is above the law,” Soyomayor wrote in part. “I oppose it because our constitution does not exempt former presidents from responsibility for criminal or treasonable acts.”
