Rep. Alejandra Ocasio-Cortez of New York issued a stark warning Tuesday about former President Donald Trump’s second term, claiming it would have “serious consequences” for democracy.
“If Donald Trump is elected president of the United States, we don’t know if there will be another election that is verifiable with integrity,” Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview with CNN on Tuesday. “He has already tried…what we saw on January 6th, he tried to overturn the results of the presidential election by force by inciting a riot.”
“I think we need to be very realistic about the significant implications of the election of President Donald Trump,” she added. “This is not a game. We need to defend our democracy, and ideally it will be based on progressive values.”
She then pointed to the former president’s ongoing legal battle, in which he faces 91 felonies in four federal and state indictments, two of which are related to the 2020 election results. He pointed out that it was related to his efforts to overturn the
Ocasio-Cortez’s comments came as part of a conversation with CNN anchor Jake Tapper about Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on President Biden released last week, which included questions about the president’s age and mental health. It also included a scathing evaluation of his sharpness.
