Odds for Michigan's next coach: Leading candidate surfaces following Sherrone Moore's dismissal

University of Michigan’s Head Coach Search Begins

The University of Michigan is on the hunt for a new head coach after the surprising firing of Sherone Moore.

This situation has taken quite an unexpected turn.

Following Moore’s dismissal, Karen DeBoer from Alabama quickly rose to the forefront as the leading candidate, as reported by Calci, a financial trading and prediction market based in New York.

Currently, DeBoer holds a 41 percent likelihood of being appointed as the new head coach, which is quite significant. This figure reflects the best odds available, and more than $170,000 was wagered shortly after the news broke on Wednesday evening.

Yet, it’s worth noting there are several contenders in the ring.

Jed Fisch from Washington is next in line with a 20 percent chance of being hired. Close on his heels is Kenny Dillingham, the head coach at Arizona State, who has a 12 percent chance. Interestingly, former NFL coach Jon Gruden is also in the mix, sitting at 7 percent.

Other potential candidates include recently dismissed Giants head coach Brian Daboll, Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman, and Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.

The recent exit of Moore stemmed from allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, leading to his termination. The university stated that it had found “credible evidence,” prompting the quick action.

Following the abrupt shift, Moore was detained in Saline, Michigan, and is currently under investigation. As of now, the specific charges remain unclear.

In the meantime, Biff Poggi has stepped up as the interim head coach for the Wolverines.

Meanwhile, Michigan State is set to tackle Texas State in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
