ICE Officer’s Heroic Rescue at Florida Pool

An ICE officer dove into a Florida pool to save a child who was struggling to stay afloat. This action comes at a time when ICE is receiving heavy criticism and protests outside its detention centers.

Gregory Simmons was at a community pool in Pasco County when he spotted a young child floating unconscious. Surveillance footage shows Simmons quickly assessing the situation and, without a moment’s hesitation, jumping into the water fully clothed to help.

He managed to pull the child to the pool’s edge and began administering CPR until the child regained consciousness.

Simmons works with ICE’s Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations in Tampa, and after his intervention, the child is expected to make a full recovery, according to ICE.

“This officer acted swiftly, providing essential medical care to a drowning child,” remarked DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Biss. “Our agents are truly exceptional. They risk their lives to apprehend dangerous individuals. Instead of demonizing ICE, critics should appreciate their efforts in safeguarding communities.”

Corporal J. Leathers from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office emphasized Simmons’ quick decision-making and willingness to act in a critical moment, highlighting that it significantly contributed to saving the child’s life.

Simmons’ act is yet another demonstration of how DHS employees are often involved in lifesaving situations when least expected. Back in March, for instance, personnel aiding the Transportation Security Administration at JFK Airport saved a 1-year-old during a medical emergency after hearing the father scream for help.

Despite ongoing criticisms from various groups labeling them in derogatory terms, supporters, including Sen. Markwayne Mullin, have publicly praised ICE officers for their dedication in protecting lives daily.

Earlier this year, multiple off-duty ICE agents also rescued a child from a hotel pool in Minnesota and performed CPR until emergency responders arrived. These incidents occur amid protests against ICE operations at facilities in New Jersey and elsewhere, where demonstrators have criticized their methods.
