The official Facebook page for the U.S. Navy SEALs and Naval Special Warfare Command was mocked this weekend for marking the start of “Pride Month.”
Backlash against the post intensified after it was featured on the popular Twitter page “Libs of TikTok.” The post had no caption and included a photo of a rainbow design that read, “NSW. Dignity. Service. Respect. Equality. Pride.”
TikTok’s Libs shared the post to X on Saturday, writing, “Navy SEALs woke up. Our elite special forces. Scary.”
The SAF account took steps to limit which accounts could comment on its posts, suggesting that its administrators knew it would be controversial.

Nevertheless, the comments section was filled with criticism.
“This is an insult to all the special forces who have risked their lives for our country,” one person wrote.

“This woke shit is like a cancer and needs to be treated as a threat to national security. It’s gone too far,” another said.
However, not all comments were critical, with some users saying they found the post positive.
“Amazing!! Thank you for recognising that our strength lies in our differences!” one person wrote.

Social media accounts for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Space Force made no mention of Pride Month on Saturday.
The incident occurred as the Department of Defense (DoD) marked Pride Month. PTSD Awareness Month in a social media post on Saturday.
In a post published Saturday afternoon, the Department of Defense explained that June is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month, a commemorative month first recognized by the U.S. government in June 2014, a year before June officially became Pride Month.

“June is PTSD Awareness Month and the Department of Defense is committed to supporting service members and veterans suffering from PTSD,” the post read.

“If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available,” the Pentagon added. “You are not alone.”
However, a photo attached to the post read, “Celebrate Pride Month 2024,” along with a graphic of the Progress Pride flag. The tweet was later deleted and replaced with a graphic for PTSD Awareness Month.
