Paddleboarder Murder Investigation in Maine
Authorities are expressing concern in the community following the tragic death of a paddleboarder, with fears stemming from rumors of a potential serial killer in the area.
Just hours after she embarked on a solo paddleboarding journey, the body of 48-year-old Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart was discovered near Crawford Pond on July 3. Kim Wear, Stewart’s sister, described her as a generous person who would “give you the shirt off her back.”
Community in Shock
The search for Stewart began around 1 AM the day after she went missing, after reports were received about a paddleboarder being unaccounted for. Shortly thereafter, authorities found her body, which prompted detectives from the MSP Major Crimes Central unit to investigate this suspicious death.
An autopsy determined that Stewart’s death was a homicide, though officials have not disclosed the exact cause.
Growing Fear Among Residents
The murder has left many in the Union community feeling uneasy, as no suspects have been identified. “Maine Police recognize the fears this incident has stirred within Union and the Crawford Pond areas,” a local statement indicated.
This incident coincides with rising anxiety regarding a possible serial killer in New England, given a series of unexplained deaths across the region recently.
Recent Deaths Under Investigation
Since March, at least 13 bodies have been found throughout Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine. For example, the body of 21-year-old Adriana Suzo was recently discovered in Massachusetts, with authorities stating that there were no apparent signs of trauma, though the cause of death remains undetermined.
Despite the unsettling string of events, officials are urging the public to remain calm as they work to unravel the circumstances of Stewart’s death.
Community Resilience
As the investigation unfolds, friends and family are mourning the loss of a beloved marine biologist and boat captain. “It’s a true blessing to have known Sunny,” Wear shared, highlighting her sister’s adventurous spirit and the impact she had on those around her. “Now we must come together and seek justice for her.”
