A few days after an explosion at a fireworks facility in California, authorities have confirmed the discovery of a human body within the building. The incident, which injured two people and left seven others missing, took place on July 1 in Yolo County.
On Friday, as part of a coordinated recovery effort led by the county coroner’s division, officials found the body. However, they have not yet made a positive identification.
Recovery operations are expected to proceed throughout the weekend, with fire crews, investigators, and coroners all working cautiously in the aftermath of the blast. There had been initial attempts to enter the building, but, according to Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence, they had to withdraw due to the significant dangers involved. As of Wednesday night, the risk had kept them from resuming searches for the missing individuals.
The coroner’s office is in communication with the families of those reported missing and intends to provide ongoing updates as new information becomes available. To respect the family of the deceased, authorities will refrain from disclosing the identity until a formal identification process has occurred, along with notifying next of kin.
Additionally, the Esparto fire district has enlisted the expertise of Cal Fire’s arson and bomb investigators to pinpoint the cause of the explosion, and an investigation is currently in process. Meanwhile, Yolo County is offering behavioral health and grief support services for those affected by the crisis.
