McIlroy Struggles at PGA Championship After Driver Issue
In Charlotte, North Carolina, Rory McIlroy faced an unexpected setback during the PGA Championship. He was forced to switch drivers after his primary one was deemed non-conforming, according to Jason Sobel on PGA Tour Radio.
McIlroy came into the tournament ranked first in strokes, which he had earned through consistent performance this year. But during the opening round on Thursday, things didn’t go as planned. He only found four fairways, leading to a disappointing 3-over 74.
As the second round progressed, McIlroy’s struggles continued, placing him 152nd out of 155 players, having hit just 36% of his fairways.
Following his round on Thursday, McIlroy opted not to talk to reporters, leaving many wondering about his thoughts and feelings on the day.
A report by Sobel mentioned that the USGA flagged McIlroy’s driver as non-conforming earlier this week. The USGA and R&A often conduct random tests on drivers during tournaments, though they keep the test results private.
