Knicks Update on OG Anunoby’s Recovery

The Knicks shared some encouraging news about OG Anunoby’s condition. It’s been two weeks since he injured his left hamstring, which was the timeline set for his re-evaluation.

While he hasn’t received full clearance for contact play, Coach Mike Brown mentioned that he’s engaging in controlled activities, including some 3-on-3 scrimmages.

“He’s definitely putting in the effort on the court, which is a sign of progress for him,” Brown said before the Knicks’ game against the Raptors at Madison Square Garden. “We’re keeping a close watch. There’s no rush with him.”

As of now, Brown doesn’t have a specific timeline for when Anunoby will be back on the court. Sunday marked the Knicks’ seventh consecutive game without him.

During his absence, the Knicks managed to achieve a 4-2 record in the first six games.

Brown noted that the situation provided him with insights into his roster’s dynamics. “You have to give other players a chance,” he said. “OG is a versatile player, so when he’s not there, it forces you to adjust strategies against different matchups. You can’t just look for one player to fill OG’s role; it requires a unified effort.”

Typically, Anunoby is the team’s top defender, often tasked with guarding the best opposing scorer. His absence has been felt most on that side of the game.

Surprisingly, the Knicks’ defense hasn’t declined significantly in Anunoby’s absence. In fact, it might even be performing better.

When Anunoby played in the first 12 games, the team’s defensive rating was 114.3, ranking 16th in the NBA. Remarkably, in the six games without him, that rating improved to 113.3, placing them 12th in the league.

This reflects a positive team adaptation, suggesting that they can effectively maintain their defensive efforts, regardless of Anunoby’s return.

“It’s important to acknowledge the players,” Brown stated. “The defense is improving. They’re really showing progress. There may be bumps in the road, but they’re stepping up their defensive game through focus, effort, and physicality, all while working to avoid fouls.”
