Ohio has banned “gender-affirming care” for minors and restricted transgender women and girls from participating in sports teams.
The Republican-controlled state Senate voted to override Republican Gov. Mike DeWine's veto of the bill.
The new law bans gender reassignment surgery and hormone therapy for transgender people under the age of 18. The measure would also ban transgender girls and women from participating in girls' and women's sports teams at both the K-12 and college levels, according to the Associated Press.
Ohio becomes the 24th state to impose restrictions on transgender athletes.

Arkansas and Tennessee were the first two states to place restrictions on transgender treatment for minors in 2021.
At least 22 states have now passed laws restricting or banning gender reassignment treatment for transgender minors. These include most states in the South and a few states in the Midwest.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ advocacy group in the United States, 35% of transgender youth live in states that have passed transgender health care bans.

In Florida, health care workers can be charged with a felony for providing gender reassignment treatment. The state ban also allows minors who were undergoing puberty block or hormone therapy to continue treatment.
Former President Donald Trump has said he would outlaw medical treatment for transgender people if re-elected to the White House.
Mr. DeWine also faced backlash from his own party for his decision. He explained that his opinion on this issue is one of “pro-life.”

“Ultimately, I believe this is about saving lives. Many parents know that their child would not have survived without the care they received at Children's Hospital of Ohio. He told me he would have died today,” DeWine said. “I have also had people who are now adults tell me that without this care, they would have taken their own lives as teenagers.”

Ohio's law is expected to go into effect in about 90 days.
