Ohio House Overrides Governor’s Veto of Transgender Bill

Ohio House Republicans voted Wednesday to override Gov. Mike DeWine's (R) veto of a bill that would protect minors from sex-change drugs and surgery and ban men from participating in women's sports teams. I did it.

The Republican-controlled Ohio House of Representatives voted 65-28 to override DeWine's veto. House Bill 68 The bill, called the “Saving Ohio Youth from Experimentation (SAFE) Act,'' would protect children, families, and women's sports teams from the consequences of the radical left's embrace of gender ideology.

“Consultation with an ideologically driven doctor does not give parents the right to harm their children through irreversible surgery or harmful drugs,” said Republican state Rep. Gary Click, the bill's author. No,” he said. sponsorhe said in his remarks before the vote.

He said:

Constitutionally, parents have no right to harm their children. The same government that can require children to attend school, ban the administration of illegal drugs, and prosecute parents for neglect and abuse also has a duty to prevent parents and doctors from chemically castrating or sterilizing children. be.

The bill will now return to the Senate. If both chambers vote to override DeWine's veto, HB68 would go into effect 90 days after the final vote. The Ohio Senate will meet on January 24th.

Lawmakers in the House and Senate overwhelmingly passed HB68 until DeWine vetoed the bill on Dec. 29, breaking away from his own party. In doing so, Mr. DeWine indicated that he accepts the left's hysterical claim that his opposition to transgenderism will cause suicide among children who identify as transgender. The governor said he made the decision to veto after talking with medical professionals, saying, “I listened to the opinions of young people and parents.Parents believe that without this treatment, their child would have died.'' told me.”

“The impact of this bill could not be more profound. The state of Ohio is saying that the state knows better than the two people who love the child most, the parents.” DeWine said at the time.

After vetoing the bill, DeWine passed an executive order banning sex-reassignment surgery for minors but allowing parents to obtain puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for their children. I put it out. He also announced several proposed rules on the issue, including targeting “fly-by-night” health care providers, or clinics that offer sex reassignment drugs without providing quality medical care.

He announced at a press conference last Friday that the draft regulations would require a multidisciplinary team, including but not limited to endocrinologists, bioethicists, and psychiatrists, to supervise individuals through the gender reassignment process. The rule also requires a “comprehensive care plan” that includes “fully informed consent from patients and parents when working with children” about the risks associated with sex-change drugs and sex-reassignment surgery. include Loss of fertility. The rules require comprehensive and long-term mental health counseling before proceeding with a gender change.

“With all due respect, the governor is trying to use a veto to strip the Legislature of its legislative authority,” Republican state Rep. Josh Williams said before the vote. The governor had only been studying HB68 for 10 days when he decided to veto it. law. Representative Click has been working with stakeholders for over two years to more fully understand the complex issues surrounding the transition of minors. ”

“They are literally trying to sterilize children in the name of their agenda,” Williams continued. “[HB68] It helps protect children, and sometimes we have to protect them even from ourselves. This will eliminate the practice of prematurely transitioning children and ensure that children going through this difficult situation have the mental health support they need. ”

“There are significant portions of this bill that the governor has not even considered,” Williams added.

“Men enter women’s sports. [and] “It’s about fair play and the integrity of competition,” he said. “Title IX was created to create equality in athletics and education, but was repealed in response to a minority of men who sought to take away opportunities from women.”

Mr. DeWine's veto and subsequent executive orders and draft regulations prohibit extreme sexual mutilation of minors while allowing the initiation of social and chemical sex changes in the name of parental rights. Legalization appeared to be a ploy to appease both sides of the transgenderism debate. Mr. DeWine appears to be part of a group of Republicans who say parents have a right to provide so-called “gender-affirming care” to their children. For example, two Republican presidential candidates, Nikki Haley and Chris Christie, argued that outlawing sex-cutting drugs and procedures would take away parents' rights to make decisions about their children.

This sentiment was echoed in comments from the Ohio Democratic Party before the vote and in a recent ruling in Idaho regarding the state's ban on sex-changing drugs and surgeries on minors, which the judge wrote in his order: Parents should take sex-change drugs.” The right to make the most basic decisions about how to care for your child. ”
