A mother in Ohio went on a 10-day summer vacation in June 2023. Instead of taking her 16-month-old daughter Jaylin, 32-year-old Christel Candelario decided to leave her baby to fend for herself in a dirty playpen.
Jaylin died slowly and agonizingly, losing nearly half her body weight before collapsing from starvation and dehydration.
The victim’s cruel and callous mother pleaded guilty on February 22 to one count of aggravated murder and one count of child endangerment.

report Candelario said at Monday’s sentencing that God and Jaylin have forgiven her. She received no such pardon from County Commonwealth’s Attorney Judge Brendan Sheehan.
“Just like you didn’t let Jaylin out of confinement, you should spend the rest of your life in solitary confinement with no freedom,” Sheehan said Monday. “The only difference is that the prison will at least feed you and give you the liquids you denied her.”

shown Candelario left Jaylin alone at her home near Lorain Avenue and West 97th Street in Cleveland on June 6, and then drove around Detroit and Puerto Rico, police said. Cuyahoga County Assistant Prosecutor Anna Faraglia said Candelario left the baby alone for two days just before going on vacation.
Candelario eventually returned home on June 16. When the child killer found the baby dead and emaciated, he called the police.
First responders found Jaylin “in a pack-and-play enclosure with soiled blankets on a liner soiled with urine and feces.”
Mr. Candelario was subsequently arrested and held on $1 million bail. She initially pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and child endangerment.
During the trial, the child killer’s lawyer, Derek Smith, tried to portray his client as a single mother with two children who was mentally taxed and “not thinking clearly.” The attempts of all those who were confronted with the facts in court were in vain.
Cuyahoga County Deputy Coroner Dr. Elizabeth Mooney testified in court Monday that the child weighed 20 pounds at his last doctor’s visit in late spring. When Jaylin’s body was recovered, it weighed 13 pounds.

Mooney said Jaylin’s death was “one of the most tragic and unfortunate events of my career,” noting that the baby likely suffered for a full week before dying.
Investigators suggested Candelario tried to hide the consequences of his actions by changing Jaylin’s clothes just before first responders arrived. Nevertheless, they observed the presence of feces in the babies’ eyes and under their fingernails.
“Humanity cannot bear the thought that this child might die while having fun every day,” Faraglia said. “And those are acts that deserve punishment. She abandoned her daughter and left her for dead.”

Said In a statement, Jaylin said she was a “beautiful baby girl who was taken from this world because of her mother’s unimaginable selfishness.”
“The idea of going on a 10-day vacation and leaving your child in a pack-n-play to starve is a new low for parental care,” O’Malley added.

report Faraglia asked the court to consider a prison phone call in which the child killer said he was having “fun” while vacationing in Puerto Rico and was planning what he would do when he was released from prison.
Fararia said the child killer “didn’t do it intentionally. He didn’t pick up a gun or a baseball bat, he didn’t cause the girl to bleed,” stressing that Candelario doesn’t appear to have any remorse.
