Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown to Skip DNC, Will Not Campaign with Kamala Harris

Senator Sherrod Brown (Ohio Democrat) will reportedly skip the Democratic National Convention (DNC) and will not campaign with Kamala Harris for president.

Brown, who is in a tough re-election battle in a state trending towards former President Donald Trump’s victory, also reportedly will not issue a statement defending President-elect Joe Biden’s campaign. handling Brown, who sits on the southern border with Mexico, will instead keep the focus on Republican opponent Bernie Moreno by attacking his character and past business practices, according to CNN.

“It’s not about left or right. It’s not about who you vote for president,” Brown told CNN. “It’s about who’s going to stand up for the people of your state.”

Nearly all of the battleground state Senate Democrats are facing an uphill battle in asking voters to split their votes between them and former President Donald Trump. As CNN noted, “in 69 Senate races between 2016 and 2020, only one candidate has won when the state voted for the opposing party’s presidential candidate.” Brown plans to focus on Moreno in hopes that voters will simultaneously vote for Trump and give him a boost by supporting him. When asked if he would campaign alongside Harris, Brown said the two have different strategies.

“I have my schedule,” Brown said, “she has her schedule. I’m going to be focused on my election. My strategy is probably different than hers… to talk about my differences with Bernie Moreno on abortion rights, the minimum wage, and the fact that I fight every day for the dignity of work.”

Brown also said he would miss the tournament.

“I often miss the convention,” Brown said, adding that he wasn’t defending Kamala’s record. “My job is to fight for the working people of Ohio. I don’t care about talking about the presidential race. That’s your job. … What matters is that I know people will vote for me because I stand up for working people and I will continue to fight for working people.”

Democrats must hold on to Ohio if they want to maintain their slim majority in the U.S. Senate, but with West Virginia leaning Republican and Montana at stake, they are likely to lose their majority in this election.

Bernie Moreno told CNN that having Kamala Harris at the top of the list of candidates increases his chances of winning.

“Oh, that helps me a lot,” Moreno said. “So maybe Scranton Joe had a little bit of credibility here in Ohio. San Francisco Kamara has no credibility at all.”
