Ohio State Women’s Basketball Coach Arrested for Drunk Driving

Ohio State women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff was arrested last week on charges related to drunk driving after he was found in a car parked in his front yard, according to police reports.

Last Tuesday, McGuff contacted Dublin police to report a reckless driver who had hit several curbs with a 2013 Toyota Sequoia. He was subsequently charged with operating a vehicle while impaired, as he refused to take breathalyzer tests and there were noticeable smells of alcohol present.

At 55 years old, he took quite a while—over two minutes—to open the doors and windows of his vehicle, and he denied consuming any substances that would impair his ability to drive, according to police documentation.

When questioned about his location, McGuff mentioned he was in a restaurant in Dublin. He was also asked to recite the alphabet from D to R but needed instructions repeated three times. The report notes that while he managed to say “D,” he couldn’t go beyond that.

The maximum penalty for this offense, classified as a first-degree misdemeanor, includes up to 180 days in jail and a fine of $1,000.

In an official statement, the department mentioned they are in communication with McGuff to keep track of the situation. They characterized it as a personal legal matter that will be disclosed further when appropriate.

McGuff recently wrapped up his 12th season as the head coach for the Buckeyes. Previously, he spent two seasons at Washington and nine at Xavier. Under his guidance, Ohio State made it to the NCAA Tournament eight times, reaching the Elite 8 two years ago and the Sweet 16 three additional times. This past March Madness, the Buckeyes faced Tennessee in the second round and were eliminated.
