An Oklahoma man suspected of stealing copper managed to shock a deputy by diving through a closed window to escape, though he overlooked a small detail that led law enforcement straight to him.
This unusual event occurred on October 1, when deputies from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a break-in at a vacant house on Sunset Lane, as captured on bodycam footage from the agency.
The deputies found Rayven Lee Wooten, 24, from Nicoma Park, allegedly pilfering copper wire from a dishwasher inside the home.
Bodycam video shows the deputy confronting Wooten, instructing him repeatedly to remove his hands from his pockets, turn around, and position himself on the ground. “You’re not listening,” the deputy exclaimed. “Turn around and get on your knees. You will get shot.”
Instead of complying, Wooten chose to dash around the kitchen and literally tossed himself headfirst through a closed living room window, prompting a surprised outburst from the deputy.
“He just bailed out the window. He’s on foot,” reported the deputy via radio.
Initially, Wooten managed to escape, but deputies later discovered he had left behind his backpack, which contained his driver’s license. This fortuitous oversight allowed them to track him down.
The sheriff’s office humorously reviewed the incident, noting that the suspect took the phrase “make a break for it” a bit too seriously, joking that he might have missed a career as a Hollywood stuntman.
Viewers online had plenty to say about the deputy’s astonished reaction and the clue left behind by the suspect. Comments ranged from amusement over Wooten’s carelessness to disbelief at the deputy’s stunned expression during the encounter.
Officials have charged Wooten with burglary, resisting arrest, and obstructing an officer.
