Oklahoma Gubernatorial Runoff Set After Tight Primary
Oklahoma’s gubernatorial race is heading to a runoff, with Attorney General Gentner Drummond and former state Senator Mike Mazzei emerging as the top candidates. The Republican primary mirrored a close contest, resulting in a near tie.
After almost all votes were counted on Tuesday, Drummond led with 26.3%, closely followed by Mazzei at 26%. The narrow margin separated them by just under 1,200 votes, as noted by the Associated Press.
Both candidates surpassed a host of others, including former Secretary of Public Safety Chip Keating and former House Speaker Charles McCall, among others.
Drummond has a remarkable background as a decorated fighter pilot who served in the Gulf War. He pursued a law degree from Georgetown University, returning to Oklahoma where he’s built a life as a rancher and businessman. His commitments span numerous ventures, including Blue Sky Bank and Drummond Law Firm.
Since taking office as attorney general in 2022, he has successfully shut down numerous illegal marijuana operations, aided law enforcement in seizing significant amounts of dangerous drugs, and challenged federal policies he views as overreaching, particularly on immigration and sports policy concerning transgender athletes.
Drummond has pledged to align with President Trump in efforts to secure the border, clamp down on illegal drug trafficking, cut taxes, and improve education. His campaign highlights concerns over Oklahoma’s low education ranking, proposing his SCHOOLS Agenda aimed at fostering reading proficiency and enhancing local control.
Conversely, Mazzei has a background rooted in finance, having founded Trinity Strategic Wealth in the 1990s. He served in the Oklahoma Senate for 12 years and was appointed Secretary of Budget in 2018 under former Governor Kevin Stitt.
His platform includes eliminating property taxes for seniors and veterans, safeguarding Oklahoma land from foreign acquisitions, and enhancing education with a focus on practical and effective curricula.
In late May, Trump took to Truth Social to promote Mazzei, dubbing him a “MAGA Warrior.”
“As a successful businessman and former Chairman of the State Senate Finance Committee, Mike understands the AMERICA FIRST Policies necessary to stimulate our economy and create jobs,” Trump stated.
The runoff is set for Tuesday, August 25th.
On the Democratic side, state Representative Cyndi Munson has secured her nomination to contend for the governorship in November. With nearly all votes counted, Munson received about 75% of the Democratic vote, far ahead of her opponents.
Munson has notable personal achievements, being the first in her family to graduate from college and also the first Asian-American woman elected to the state legislature in 2015. Her tenure has seen her champion against various controversial legislative issues.
The political landscape in Oklahoma is heating up as both parties prepare for the upcoming elections.
