Authorities in Oklahoma are investigating a local high school after footage from a fundraising event last week showed students sucking and licking each other’s toes.

The footage from Deer Creek High School in Edmond, Oklahoma shocked and disgusted social media users across the country this weekend. Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters soon announced that he would investigate the incident as “abhorrent.”

The footage was originally obtained by Fox 25 and was filmed during a week-long fundraiser for a local coffee shop that employs people with special needs. According to the paper, students from grades 9 to 12 volunteered to participate in contests in various classes by paying an entry fee.

The video shows pairs of student volunteers, one sitting on a chair and the other lying underneath, licking peanut butter off their toes.

“This is terrible,” Walters said in a statement Friday. “We are cleaning up this mess in Oklahoma schools. Our authorities are investigating.”

TikTok’s Outrage Librarian Ribbs quickly shared the footage on social media, demanding to know “who approved this.” However, the account falsely claimed that the students were paired with an adult to participate in the activity.

The incident prompted a flurry of reactions, with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) declaring, “This is child abuse.”

Walters responded to Cruz’s statement by saying, “I totally agree. We’re stopping this in Oklahoma.”

Parents and students also responded with statements to Fox 25. One parent who spoke to the station said on condition of anonymity:

“I was surprised,” one student told the magazine. “I didn’t think they would do something like that. I was just shocked. I didn’t really feel anything. I kind of hated it, but I’m glad I wasn’t there.”

“Every time she told me yesterday that something like that happened, I had to ask her, ‘Wait, what? Are they licking peanut butter off their toes? What? What?” One parent said of a conversation with a student.

Meanwhile, the school celebrated the “success” of its fundraising campaign in an official statement.

“This afternoon, Deer Creek High School will be hosting Not Your Average Joe Coffee, an organization created to ‘inspire the community by engaging students and adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities.’ A total of $152,830.38 was raised for the event, school officials wrote.

Deer Creek High School administrators celebrated the “success” of a fundraiser that came under fire for including a toe-licking contest.

“On Thursday, February 29, 2024, Deer Creek High School hosted an assembly called Clash of Classes for students who had paid to attend. During this assembly, students in grades 9-12 Voluntarily participated in various class contests organized by students. In the spirit of raising money for NYAJ. Participants in the gathering were all students who had signed up in advance for games to play. Deer Creek faculty and staff , did not participate in any games during this Clash of Classes gathering. There were many dedicated participants. Students generously dedicated their personal time to achieve this momentous accomplishment. But this will benefit the community well beyond the boundaries of Deer Creek, and we would like to thank all the patrons, businesses and sponsors who helped make this year’s fantastic fundraising week a success.” The statement continued.
