Olbermann denies that Colbert was canceled by CBS due to politics

CBS Cancels “Late Show with Stephen Colbert”

Former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann recently weighed in on the cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” He dismissed the notion that Colbert’s removal was politically motivated, particularly regarding Trump criticisms. “Sorry. That’s not what happened here,” Olbermann stated, pointing out that Colbert is still slated to host until May 2026.

CBS announced on Thursday that the long-running show, which has been on air for over 30 years, will conclude in May 2026. Notably, other hosts will not take over Colbert’s spot after his departure. The program was initially hosted by David Letterman from 1992 until 2015.

Following the news of Colbert’s cancellation, reactions on social media sparked outrage, with some users claiming it reflects a deeper political issue in the U.S. One user remarked, “We are officially in the fascism stage, spending comedians from the air who criticize our dear leader.”

After CBS’s announcement, numerous left-leaning politicians and journalists have argued that Colbert’s ousting stems from his political views, suggesting that it’s part of an effort to appease White House officials amid a potential merger between CBS’s parent company, Paramount, and Skydance. Sen. Bernie Sanders chimed in, linking the cancellation to a $16 million settlement that CBS had made with Trump regarding alleged election interference.

CBS, however, has attributed the cancellation to financial losses, stating that the show has been losing about $40 million annually. Colbert has consistently had strong ratings among late-night hosts, averaging around 2.4 million viewers per episode, but even that has not shielded him from the broader decline in late-night advertising revenue.

Initially taking over after Letterman, Colbert carved out a niche for himself with a style heavily critical of Trump, moving away from the traditional late-night format. Interestingly, while he is highly popular, his show still trails behind Fox’s Greg Gutfeld in viewership.

The decision to end “The Late Show” brings up conversations about the direction of late-night television and the implications of political affiliations on entertainment programming. What’s next for CBS remains uncertain, as does the future format of late-night shows. Many fans are left wondering about the show’s legacy and the potential impact on the late-night landscape.

Interestingly, Colbert’s exuberant reaction to Biden’s 2020 election win showed his emotional connection to politics, where he celebrated openly, showcasing a stark contrast to the current turmoil surrounding his show’s cancellation.
