Ryan Lochte and Kayla Reid Announce Divorce
Ryan Lochte, a six-time Olympic gold medalist, and his wife, model Kayla Ray Reid, shared on Wednesday that they are ending their marriage.
According to TMZ, Reid filed for divorce earlier this year, describing the decision as one made “after deep prayer and reflection.” She mentioned that she respects marriage deeply, acknowledging this has been one of the most painful phases of her life. There was a sense of hesitation to discuss it until the healing process began, rather than speaking from a place of hurt.
“We sometimes face challenges we don’t expect, and in those times, we are often compelled to make tough choices for the sake of peace, our kids, and the future,” she reflected. Reid concluded that these types of decisions, though hard, can sometimes be necessary.
Lochte, in turn, took to Instagram to express that it wasn’t an easy path for either of them. He echoed his wife’s sentiments and reflected on the past year, noting it brought significant changes which led to their decision to part ways.
“This hasn’t been easy, but I believe it’s a step toward mutual peace and happiness. I’m committed to working on healing and respect moving forward,” he added gratefully for the support they have received.
The couple got engaged in 2016. That same year remains notable due to Lochte’s controversial incident at a gas station during the Rio Olympics, where he falsely claimed he and his teammates were robbed at gunpoint. The actual situation involved security staff at the gas station, and the fallout was significant—resulting in lost sponsorships and a suspension from US Swimming.
Lochte celebrated his sixth Olympic gold in Rio as part of the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. Meanwhile, Reid was named Playboy’s Playmate of the Month in July 2015.
