Team USA Legends Auction Gold Medals
Some former Olympic legends from Team USA have taken a bold step, countering expert advice by deciding to auction their gold medals. This decision came as a former athlete shared on Facebook that the proceeds from the sale would help fund his move abroad. He also mentioned selling his home in California, which seems to be part of overcoming some financial struggles.
Greg Luganis, a 65-year-old diver and four-time gold medalist, expressed in a Facebook post that he felt his career had not been managed well and that selling his medals was a way to get some much-needed cash. “I needed the money,” he stated bluntly. Interestingly, he mentioned having auctioned off three of his medals, contradicting the “expert” advice given during previous attempts to do so.
The diver sold two of his gold medals and one silver, reportedly fetching a total of $437,000, according to sources. His gold medals were earned at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, while the silver medal dates back to the 1976 Games in Montreal.
In his post, Luganis continued to emphasize his financial situation. “I told the truth. I needed money,” he wrote. He also reflected on his past, noting that while many build businesses for profit, he has medals he deeply appreciates.
As he prepared for his relocation, he mentioned sorting through his belongings, stating he aimed to donate or sell items that were no longer needed. Now calling Panama his home, he shared feelings about letting go of possessions, particularly after witnessing friends lose everything in wildfires back in California.
While he did not fully explain why he chose Panama, the diver hinted at a desire for a fresh start—a sort of spiritual journey to redefine himself. “Can I discover now that I am Greg Luganis?” he mused, sharing his hopes to live authentically and nurture the human spirit through varied life experiences.
Beyond his Olympic achievements, Luganis also holds an impressive collection of 11 additional gold medals from World Championships and Pan American Games between 1979 and 1986.
