Toshiaki Fushimi, Keirin Racer, Dies After Race Accident

Toshiaki Fushimi, a keirin racer, tragically passed away following a fall during the Matsusaka Keirin race on Saturday, as confirmed by the Japan Keirin Association.

He was 50 years old.

The former Olympic silver medalist was taken to the hospital after veering towards the outer barrier in an attempt to avoid a collision with other racers. Unfortunately, he ended up crashing into a fence during the final lap of the race.

Reports and footage highlighted the distressing moment of his accident, which has deeply affected the cycling community.

Fushimi sustained critical injuries and, sadly, died at 10:15 AM on Sunday.

This cycling icon earned an Olympic silver medal for Japan in the men’s team sprint at the 2004 Athens Olympics, teaming up with Masaki Inoue and Tomohiro Nagatsuka.

In his career, he achieved many Keirin Grand Prix victories, accumulating a remarkable total of 619 wins.

His death has left a void in the cycling world, with many expressing their condolences.

Former Malaysian professional cyclist Josiah Ng Ong Lam shared a touching tribute on Instagram, reflecting on their rivalry and the respect they held for one another. He described Fushimi as “one of the best keirin riders Japan has ever produced,” and expressed shock at the news, extending his thoughts to Fushimi’s family and the wider Japanese keirin community.

“Rest in peace, champion,” he concluded, poignantly honoring a life dedicated to cycling.
