Olympic organizers criticized for failing to compensate 60,000 volunteers

Workers Not Paid for Olympic Volunteering

Concerns are being raised online about LA28, the nonprofit organization responsible for the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. The organization plans to recruit around 60,000 volunteers who will work without compensation during these major sporting events.

The event, touted as the “Highfalutin Festival,” will take place in Los Angeles from July 14 to July 30, 2028, with the Paralympics following from August 15 to August 27, 2028. Ticket prices for premier seating can reach up to $8,250.

Critics are voicing strong opinions against the idea of unpaid volunteers being asked to carry out ten eight-hour shifts across various areas including ceremonies, communications, and operations. One user pointedly remarked, “You want volunteers for a soup kitchen, not for an Olympics. It’s like you don’t have any money,” reflecting widespread frustration over the lack of payment.

LA28 has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the backlash. Nonetheless, their website clearly states that the volunteer roles are unpaid, with no compensation for travel or accommodation expenses.

While volunteering often lacks glamour, it can provide sports fans with free access to significant events, like the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Many argue that such experiences can enhance resumes and leadership skills, potentially making volunteers more attractive for paid positions later. However, some detractors believe that local residents who need the job opportunities should fill these roles instead.

One frustrated commenter suggested, “Why not offer affordable tickets instead?” Another pointed out, “I can’t believe the LA28 Games are creating 60,000 jobs, just for people to pass the time for free.” The negative sentiment continues as some view the situation as an exploitation of eager volunteers.

Despite the criticism, large-scale volunteer programs are a common feature of the Olympics. For context, when Los Angeles last hosted the Games in 1984, around 28,742 Californians volunteered—and it was free.

To apply for the 2028 event, applicants must be at least 18 years old and speak English. Interestingly, while volunteers do not need to reside in Los Angeles or even the U.S., they must be in the Los Angeles metropolitan area during the games.

Interviews and training for selected applicants will be conducted either in person or online.
