Olympics have first positive drug test after Iraqi athlete is accused of using steroids

He tested positive for a banned substance before the Olympic opening ceremony began.

Iraqi judoka Sajjad Sehen’s first Olympic Games was over before it began after a sample taken in Paris on Tuesday tested positive for methandienone and boldenone.

The 28-year-old was due to play in the match on Tuesday but will instead return home.

Sehen has been provisionally suspended pending prosecution of his disciplinary case, according to the international testing agency that oversees the International Olympic Committee’s anti-doping program.

“This means that athletes will not be able to compete, train, coach or take part in any activities during the Olympic Games,” the agency said.

The agency added that Sehen has the “right to appeal the implementation of the provisional suspension to the Court of Arbitration for Sport – Anti-Doping Department (CAS ADD)” and also the “right to request analysis of the B sample”.

Sehen competed in the 81kg class.

Six athletes tested positive for banned substances at the Tokyo Olympics.

Methandienone is sold under the brand name Dianabol, commonly abbreviated as D-Bol. Both of the substances Sheehen allegedly took are anabolic steroids.

Sehen was scheduled to face Uzbekistan’s Sharofidin Boltaboev in the round of 32.

Sehen will win a bronze medal at the 2023 Arab Games and won two bronze medals in the same category at last year’s World Cup.

Apart from the 18-member football team, only three athletes will represent Iraq at the Olympics: sprinter Taha Hussein Yassin, swimmer Hasan Al-Zinky and weightlifter Ali Rubaiawi.
