The 2024 Paris Olympics will be home to the most talent-rich international basketball tournament in history, and the star power won’t just be limited to Team USA. Long gone are the days when the 1992 Dream Team competed for the gold medal with just five NBA players. Basketball is now a truly international sport, and despite the USA sending a loaded roster, the tournament’s three best players compete for other countries.
There’s good reason for the U.S. to remain the favorite to win this tournament. LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant form the foundation of one of the best teams in the history of the sport. The U.S. has come close a few times in training, but no one has been able to beat them yet. But with the knockout stage looming, an upset is always possible in a single-elimination tournament.
SB Nation has already ranked the 12 teams in the Olympic men’s basketball tournament by who has the best chance of winning the gold medal. We also have a list of the best 50 players from each participating team. With Nikola Jokic leading the way for Serbia, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for Canada, and Franz and Moritz Wagner for Germany, there won’t be any easy matchups once the knockout stage begins. Here’s everything you need to know about the Paris 2024 Olympic men’s basketball tournament.
Olympic Basketball Formats and Rules
- Olympic basketball competition begins with group play. Teams play each other in their group once. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout round.
- The first tiebreaker for group matches will be the head-to-head result. If three teams are tied on points, goal difference will determine the team that advances.
- The knockout round is a 16-team single-elimination tournament. The top two teams will be placed at either end of the bracket. Teams cannot play against other teams from their group in the quarterfinals.
