Omaha Police Shoot Woman in Walmart Incident
Officers from the Omaha Police Department shot and killed a woman who attacked her 3-year-old son with a knife in a Walmart parking lot in Omaha, Nebraska, on Tuesday, according to police reports.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman slashing at an approximately 3-year-old boy with a large knife. Unfortunately, they had to shoot her, and she died at the scene. The child was immediately taken to a hospital for care, as noted in a police statement.
Authorities emphasized that this was a singular incident and assured the public that there was no ongoing threat.
Local media indicated that officers responded to the Walmart located on 72nd Street around 9:20 a.m.
Deputy Chief Scott Gray explained to reporters at the scene that the woman had allegedly taken the child from its guardian and was letting him walk outside. As police began to approach her, she reportedly started “swiping” at the boy, resulting in lacerations to his hands and face.
Fortunately, the child is expected to survive his injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
A spokesperson for Walmart said violence of this nature is unacceptable. The statement also noted the company’s cooperation with police as they conduct their investigation.
Updates on the situation will be provided as more information becomes available.
