Ilhan Omar Responds to Allegations of Immigration Fraud
Ilhan Omar, the Democratic representative from Minnesota, dismissed concerns regarding allegations that she married her brother as “sick.” This came after Tom Homan, the former border czar, indicated that federal authorities may investigate potential immigration fraud linked to her.
Homan stated last week that documents related to Omar’s case are under scrutiny, especially as controversy surrounding her previous Medicaid fraud claims in Minnesota resurfaces. President Trump has also brought attention back to these older allegations.
While Homan suggested that there could be strong grounds for fraud, he mentioned that the statute of limitations might complicate any potential prosecution of Omar.
Omar was approached by Fox News Digital in the halls of Congress, where she was asked about Homan’s comments. She replied, “I don’t know what the investigation will focus on, so I won’t comment.” When asked if she believed authorities would find anything significant, she firmly stated, “Absolutely not.”
Before stepping into an elevator, she voiced her frustration, saying, “Because they’re sick!” in response to a question about the persistence of the allegations against her.
Senate Republican leaders, including Senator Ted Cruz from Texas, assert that if the claims regarding Omar marrying her brother for immigration purposes are true, it could lead to serious legal consequences. Cruz pointed out that Omar could face criminal charges stemming from multiple laws, noting, “If this is accurate, Omar would be in violation of federal law.” He emphasized that marriage fraud could result in significant penalties, including prison time and fines.
Omar’s background adds a layer to the narrative. She was born in Somalia and arrived in the U.S. in 1995 after her family was granted asylum, becoming a naturalized citizen by 2000. Her marital timeline includes a religious marriage to Ahmed Hirsi in 2002 and a legal marriage to British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009, despite still having a relationship with Hirsi, with whom she shares a child.
Reports suggest that Omar and Elmi didn’t legally separate until 2011, with their divorce finalizing in 2017. In 2020, Omar married Tim Mynett, a political consultant.
Cruz also raised concerns about possible violations of Minnesota’s incest laws and tax evasion issues regarding joint tax returns filed during her marriage to Elmi. These allegations could carry additional legal ramifications, compounding the seriousness of the current situation surrounding Omar.
