Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, criticized the GOP on Tuesday for avoiding a vote to release documents linked to Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender who recently passed away.
This week, Republican leaders abandoned their legislative agenda and opted for an early summer recess. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) claimed that the decision wasn’t meant to shield Republicans from difficult votes regarding Epstein or to protect Trump from potentially damaging revelations, but rather to put an end to the Democrats’ “political game.”
“The Pedophiles are shutting down Congress to dodge a vote on the Epstein Files,” Omar stated. I shared this on x to highlight the issue.
Last week, Republican lawmakers rejected a vote proposed by Democrats to compel the release of Epstein’s documents, which failed by a narrow margin of 211-210, divided along party lines.
“We’re putting a stop to this Democratic sideshow, which is what we’re doing by preventing the Rules Committee from continuing its antics,” Johnson remarked during a press conference on Tuesday.
“Yet here we are being lectured on transparency,” he continued.
That said, there are some Republicans who haven’t completely dismissed the public’s appetite for more insights into Epstein’s illicit international activities.
The House of Representatives’ Surveillance and Government Reform Subcommittee voted on Tuesday to summon Ghislaine Maxwell, a close associate of Epstein.
There’s a hope among some that this move will shed light on those involved in the trafficking network.
“This is progress. We’ll keep fighting until Epstein’s files are disclosed,” I mentioned on social platform x after the vote.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated on Tuesday that he is in discussions with Maxwell’s legal team to see if she would be willing to speak with prosecutors.
“I anticipate meeting with Maxwell soon,” Blanche stated. “Until now, the department hadn’t inquired about her willingness to engage with us, but that has changed.”
