Once more: British police detain another white victim of violence instead of the minority attackers

Recent events have sparked strong discussions about perceived disparities in the British justice system, particularly regarding how white individuals, especially white men, are treated compared to other groups.

On June 21st, shocking video footage surfaced showing six black men attacking a young white man on Broad Street in Birmingham, England.

As tensions escalated, the mob targeted a 20-year-old white man named Cody Harper. In the video, he is seen trying to engage someone next to him when one of the attackers, wearing a black jacket, blindsides him, knocking him to the ground. As Harper attempts to get back on his feet, another assailant punches him from behind.

Struggling to regain his balance, Harper becomes disoriented. A female police officer, seemingly unconcerned with the fleeing attackers, collides with him, leading to Harper defensively swatting at her, which results only in her losing her hat.

Without announcing her police status, the officer then lunges at Harper’s neck and handcuffs him. When he explains that he was simply trying to go home and that others were attacking him, she derogatorily calls him “shit.”

“You are under arrest for assault on a police officer,” she declares as she takes him to the squad car, where another officer forces Harper inside. Witnesses nearby attempt to clarify that Harper was attacked first, to which the officer responds affirmatively, but the situation remains unchanged.

Following the circulation of the incident online, Birmingham police acknowledged the disturbance, stating that a man had been arrested in connection with it. They reported that one officer was struck during the melee and emphasized that one man faced charges related to assaulting a police officer.

In addressing the situation, Birmingham police have faced backlash for dismissing a violent mob attack as merely a “struggle.” They’ve also implored the public not to share video evidence of the event. This follows similar requests from Northern Ireland police after a serious incident involving an asylum seeker.

The police maintained that their response was appropriate, stating that they had no concerns about the officer’s actions. This response has drawn further indignation from the public, including political figures.

James McMurdoch, a British reformist MP, voiced his concerns, noting that the video clearly shows Harper as a victim. He criticized the officers for not intervening to stop the attack on him and for responding aggressively towards him instead.

Another MP, Robert Jenrick, echoed these sentiments, questioning the rationale behind arresting Harper while leaving his attackers free. He also observed ongoing patterns of perceived unequitable treatment within policing practices.

As a result of public outcry, Birmingham Police revised their statements, now acknowledging the “assault” and stating they were actively investigating the perpetrators of the attack.

Additionally, they pointed out their original involvement in arresting another man in the area during the incident.

Cody Harper is expected to appear in court on July 23. This incident follows similar troubling police actions highlighted in recent weeks regarding unequal treatment during violent encounters.

Such occurrences have raised significant concerns about broader systemic issues within the policing framework, emphasizing the need for reform and accountability.
