One person died and several others were injured when a pickup truck drove onto a sidewalk during a bicycle festival in Colorado on Saturday morning.
The Chevrolet pickup hit several pedestrians around 11:45 a.m. while traveling through Old Town Fort Collins. It continued moving until colliding with a tree, as reported by the Fort Collins Police Services.
Authorities do not suspect that the crash was intentional.
Six people, including the driver, were taken to the hospital with varying injuries, though their specific conditions have not yet been disclosed.
One unidentified individual later died, according to police statements.
Fort Collins Police Chief Jeff Swoboda expressed his condolences, describing the day as tragic for the community. He acknowledged the emotional toll the incident would have on those directly involved, as well as on witnesses and first responders. Support for victims is being coordinated, with victim advocates providing assistance.
Swoboda also commended the prompt response from law enforcement and community members who stepped in to help during the crisis.
The collision occurred close to the annual Tour de Fat bicycle parade, an event that typically attracts large crowds. Many onlookers and patrol officers were present in the area at the time due to the festival.
The FCPS is examining the details surrounding the incident, including whether impairment played a role.
Initial reports suggest that the truck driver reversed from a parking spot on Mountain Avenue and hit another vehicle before driving onto the sidewalk, hitting pedestrians and crashing into a tree.
Officials closed off the crash site for about six hours while investigators gathered evidence.
Inquiries made to the FCPS did not receive an immediate response.
