A poll released on Tuesday found that one in three Democrats believe US President Joe Biden should withdraw from the 2024 presidential race following his disastrous debate defeat against former President Donald Trump.
2 days Reuters/Ipsos Poll After Biden stuttered throughout the debate and appeared too weak to withstand Trump’s attacks, about 32% of Democrats said he should not seek reelection.
Reuters notes that Democrats have long been skeptical of Biden’s candidacy: A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in January, when the party’s nomination battle was still ongoing, found that 49% of Democrats dismissed the possibility of Biden running again in 2024.
Biden has vowed to continue the campaign, but if he were to drop out, no Democrat would be better suited to a hypothetical showdown with Trump than Biden.

Polls show that Democrats who have been named as potential alternatives perform as well as or worse than Biden against their opponents in hypothetical matchups.
And Reuters reported that 59% of Democrats believe Biden is too old to serve in government, roughly the same as a January poll.
The poll was conducted online among 1,070 adults nationwide.
