Ongoing coverage: Officials discuss Newark airport and the mayor’s arrest near an ICE detention facility

Newark Liberty International Airport has resolved its recent delays and cancellations after the FAA announced a pause following a temporary communication issue.

On April 28, air traffic controllers lost contact with a plane headed for Newark Airport for about 90 seconds.

This communication failure resulted in numerous delayed or canceled flights, with airport general manager Aidan O’Donnell diverting three dozen flights that day, according to reports.

The situation worsened when air traffic controllers experienced absenteeism related to the Federal Employee Compensation Act.

Meanwhile, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested on Friday for refusing to leave an ICE facility.

Baraka, accompanied by three New Jersey legislators, attempted to enter the Delaney Hall ICE Detention Center, which included Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and Lamonica McQuiber.

“We waited a long time, over an hour, and then they told us to leave. When I insisted I wouldn’t go, they came outside and arrested me,” Baraka said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Briefing.” “It felt targeted.”

He further claimed that ICE officials had specifically aimed at him.

Alina Haba, a lawyer from the New Jersey area, defended the administration’s actions, stating that the mayor had trespassed and ignored several warnings from Homeland Security officials.

Several lawmakers are set to discuss both incidents on Sunday morning shows.
