A group of online activists posed as a 13-year-old girl on Instagram in order to help apprehend suspected child predators in Pennsylvania, according to police reports.
On July 17, a member of “Predator Poachers” informed the Benthalem Police Station that she had been using Instagram for eight months. The police later identified a suspect, Rooney, 42, who reportedly made sexually explicit comments and was seen with a group of 13-year-olds who intended to engage in sexual activities with “her.”
Rooney arrived in Benthalem, met the girl, and engaged in sexual contact that night. Following this, the group confronted him and called the authorities. He now faces several charges, including unlawful contact with minors, attempting to engage in deviant sexual acts with minors, and attempting statutory sexual assault. During his interaction with the police, Rooney allegedly allowed them to use his phone to access and display child pornography.
The encounter concluded with Rooney’s arrest, as stated by William McVay, director of public safety in Bensalem. Although the situation brought a predator to justice, McVay cautioned that these vigilante actions can be risky.
“They aren’t trained law enforcement. This can be the most dangerous moment for actual police officers,” he told the media, adding that there may be other victims involved.
Vigilante groups targeting predators are increasingly prevalent. Organizations like “DAP: Dads Against Predators,” founded in 2021, often utilize dating applications, posing as minors to lure predators into meetings at public locations.
Some of these activists have expressed frustration at the pace of law enforcement and feel compelled to act on their own.
