A recent surveillance photo of an OpenAI employee, who stands accused of sneaking in a recording device at the company, has quickly become a source of amusement online. Many users are mocking the engineer’s surprised expression, likening it to that of a screaming goat or even Gollum from “The Lord of the Rings.”
Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, was spotted on camera looking behind a television in an OpenAI conference room shortly after security discovered a hidden audio device connected to the TV, as stated by federal prosecutors.
The image captures the Saudi national, arrested by the FBI on October 9, peering curiously around the television, his eyes wide and mouth slightly open.
Almost immediately, social media users began creating a plethora of memes poking fun at Alfozan’s bewildered look.
One widely shared meme read, “It was at this moment, he knew he f–ked up,” featuring Alfozan’s face circled in red.
User Chet (@WeirdSciChet) humorously suggested that Alfozan’s expression reflected his reaction when the FBI came knocking at his door.
The popular X account Autism Capital posted a meme of a bug-eyed goat, drawing parallels to Alfozan’s startled demeanor.
Another user, Morgan Wyatt Khan (@MorganWKhan), chimed in with a GIF of Gollum, adding a caption about Alfozan’s reaction upon being caught.
Similarly, user helix (@helixbase) joked that Alfozan’s close-up photo resembled the expression of someone asking ChatGPT how to hide a recording device, only to have the technology facilitate his downfall.
Comments also poked fun at Alfozan’s awkward posture behind the television. One user, Bewildered Beast (@itsbewildered), likened it to anyone struggling to connect a cord behind furniture.
On Reddit, users debated why a surveillance camera was placed behind the television in the first place, with one commenter suggesting that it may have been installed after the discovery of the hidden device.
Prosecutors allege that Alfozan, who joined OpenAI in July 2025, tried to record conversations by hiding a device behind a conference room television around September 28.
This device, concealed within toilet paper and plugged into a USB socket, was found by OpenAI staff around September 30. Alfozan reportedly returned to the conference room on October 5 to inspect the area behind the TV.
Investigators also recovered a second recording device from an unattended bag containing Alfozan’s wallet and identification.
Alfozan, who worked at Meta before joining OpenAI, was terminated from his position on the day of his arrest. He faces charges related to the unauthorized interception of oral communications, which can carry a penalty of up to five years in prison.
His attorney, William Pernik, has described the allegations as completely out of character for Alfozan and advised against rushing to judgment due to his Saudi nationality.
The complaint does not suggest that Alfozan acted on behalf of any foreign government, nor does OpenAI indicate that he accessed or stole any sensitive company materials.
Alfozan has not been convicted yet, and his next court hearing is set for October 19.
