A new poll finds that only a third of voters are confident that Vice President Harris would win the election if she became the Democratic presidential nominee.
a POLITICO/Morning Consult PollIn the survey conducted in late May and released Wednesday, 14% of voters said Harris was very likely to win the election, while 20% said she was somewhat likely to win if she became the Democratic nominee.
In the same poll, 37 percent said there was no chance she would win the election.
Harris said in February that she was ready to serve amid questions about Biden’s age after special counsel Robert Hur’s report on the president’s handling of classified documents described him as an “oldering man with declining memory.” Harris, 59, had previously said she was open to becoming president “if necessary,” but dismissed concerns about Biden’s fitness to be commander in chief and slammed Republican criticism on the issue.
According to the latest poll, 21% of respondents said they would like to see Harris be the Democratic presidential nominee if Biden doesn’t run, followed by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on 10% each. Just over 40% said they didn’t know or had no opinion.
And 42% said they had a very unfavorable impression of Harris, matching the poor rating Biden received in the survey. Just 21% said they had a very favorable impression of the vice president, and 23% said the same about the president.
Additionally, the same poll found Biden and former President Trump neck and neck, with each receiving 45 percent support ahead of their November rematch.
The poll was conducted May 28-29 among 3,996 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
