Democrats and the Transgender Athlete Debate
In a recent inquiry by Axios regarding the transgender athlete controversy that has impacted the Democratic Party, only one member was notably forthright.
Axios approached twenty potential Democratic candidates for the 2028 presidential race, posing three questions: “Should transgender girls compete in women’s sports?” “Should transgender youth under 18 receive puberty blockers or hormones?” and “Can a man become a woman?” While most candidates chose not to engage, only one provided a direct answer.
Rahm Emanuel, the former Chicago mayor, reiterated his previous stance during an interview with Megyn Kelly. He expressed a clear belief that men cannot become women and that biological males should not compete in women’s sports. Emanuel also commented that he believes minors are too young to make decisions about undergoing sex reassignment treatments. Additionally, he stated his view that biological men shouldn’t be placed in women’s prisons.
Several prominent figures, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and others, either declined to answer or did not respond to Axios.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg referred Axios to his previous remarks from the Emanuel-Kelly interview on NPR. He emphasized the need for compassion towards transgender individuals, especially young people facing tough situations. He also acknowledged the concerns of parents, like wondering how a daughter in a sports league might compete against boys. Buttigieg suggested that this issue challenges past Democratic positions on sports and highlighted potential fairness concerns when permitting trans athletes to compete in women’s categories.
Buttigieg’s spokesperson did not reply to further questions posed by Axios.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s press secretary cited previous comments made in December regarding the issue. When responding to Emanuel’s remarks about men competing in women’s sports, Shapiro reportedly rolled her eyes. She conveyed the importance of meeting people where they are while still adhering to one’s principles. “You have to stay true to your values,” she stated, mentioning that sports officials, rather than politicians, ought to determine the rules.
Shapiro expressed empathy toward those feeling out of place in their bodies and condemned the bullying they face, particularly from public figures. “I think it’s a terrible thing to be born in the wrong body,” he commented when discussing the disparity between his personal beliefs and political statements.
Transgender issues are often viewed as politically challenging, particularly since they may contribute to voter loss for Democrats in key elections. Notably, President Trump has invested significantly in advertisements focused on this topic, asserting his position against Harris and positioning himself as the advocate for constituents’ concerns. The Democratic Party, however, remains divided and cautious in establishing a unified stance on these matters.
